Jose De Melo Vieira

New Bedford – Jose De Melo Vieira, age 85, died on Sunday, October 20, 2013 at St. Luke’s Hospital after a period of declining health. He was the loving husband of Maria Adelina (Moniz) Vieira with whom he shared 63 years of marriage. Mr. Vieira was born in Furnas, São Miguel, Açores, a son of Fastina De Jesus (Machado) and Manuel Vieira De Melo. He immigrated to this country 45 years ago and worked as a Laborer at Riverside Sink Company until his retirement. Jose enjoyed gardening and spending time with his loving family.
His surviving family includes his wife, Maria Adelina of New Bedford; 8 children: Jose Manuel Vieira of New Bedford, Nelson D. Vieira of North Carolina, Joao J. Vieira of Taunton, Goretti Medeiros of Dartmouth, Louisa Cook and Ana Medeiros, both of New Bedford, Christina Almeida of Fairhaven and Susan Marie Soares of New Bedford; as well as several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Mr. Vieira was predeceased by his grandson Ryan Medeiros as well as several siblings.
Jose’s funeral will be Wednesday, October 23 beginning at 8:00 A.M. at PERRY FUNERAL HOME, 111 Dartmouth St. in New Bedford, with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 9:00 A.M. Interment will follow at Rural Cemetery in New Bedford. Visiting hours will take place Tuesday evening in the funeral home from 5 – 8 P.M. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
