Joao M. Cabecinha

New Bedford- Joao M. Cabecinha, age 85, died on Thursday, August 29, 2013 at St. Luke’s Hospital after a period of declining health. He was the beloved husband of Maria Rosa (Telheiro) Cabecinha. Joao was born in Santa Cruz,São Miguel, Açores a son of Diamantina (Moniz) and Luis Medeiros Cabecinha. He, along with his family, moved to this country in September of 1976 where he worked very hard as a Landscaper in Padanaram for the well-being of his wife and children. Mr. Cabecinha enjoyed soccer, old western movies, gardening and making his own wine; but above all, Joao loved, very much, to be with his family.
His surviving family includes his wife, Maria Rosa of New Bedford; 4 loving children: Maria Jose Borges and her husband, Eduardo, of New Bedford, Joana I. Carvalho and her husband, Antonio, of New Bedford, Conceicao Kollars and her husband, Michael, of North Carolina and Joao L. Cabecinha of New Bedford; 7 grandchildren: Natacha Salemme, Tony Correia, Melissa Correia, Eduardo Borges, Diana Carvalho-Lallo, Jessica Carvalho and Joao Borges; as well as 6 great grandchildren, 3 living siblings and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Cabecinha was also predeceased by 6 siblings.
Joao’s funeral will be Tuesday beginning at 8:00 A.M. at PERRY FUNERAL HOME, 111 Dartmouth St. in New Bedford, with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 9:00 A.M. Interment will follow at Rural Cemetery in New Bedford. Visiting hours will be Monday evening in the funeral home from 6 – 8 P.M. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
