New Bedford – Leonard F. Sylvia, age 88, passed away, unexpectedly, on Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at Sacred Heart Home. Mr. Sylvia was born in New Bedford, the son of the late Annie (Corey) and Frank S. Sylvia and former companion of the late Mary DaLuz. He was a lifelong resident of New Bedford and was employed by the State of Massachusetts in the Highway Department. Prior to his work for the state, Mr. Sylvia worked at Morse Cutting Tools for over 20 years. He was also a Constable in the 1950's - 1960's. Mr. Sylvia proudly served his country in the United States Navy and was a WWII veteran. Leonard was a former member of the Fall River Marine Museum and enjoyed sailing and painting. Leonard owned a blue sailboat which he enjoyed very much. He was a graduate of Campbell Business School in 1947. Mr. Sylvia loved the Red Sox, the Kennedy's, enjoyed debating politics and was a strong advocate for the Democratic party.

Mr. Sylvia's Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, July 8 at Sacred Heart Home Chapel, 359 Summer St. in New Bedford, at 10:00 A.M. Burial will follow at Rural Cemetery. A brief visiting hour will be held prior to his Mass starting at 9:00 A.M. for family and friends. Arrangements placed in the care of Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St in New Bedford.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to the Sacred Heart Home.
