New Bedford – Arthur Soares, age 92, passed away on Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at St. Luke’s Hospital. He was the beloved widower of Cecelia (Quadros) Soares who passed in 2005 with whom he shared over 50 years of marriage. Born in New Bedford, he is the son of Rose (Botelho) and Joseph Soares. He has lived in this area all of his life and worked as a meat-cutter at Stop & Shop until his retirement. Mr. Soares proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II and held the rank of Sergeant in the Battery C 7th Field Artillery 1st Infantry Division. He participated in 3 invasions which included D-Day Omaha Beach in Normandy, France, North Africa and Sicily; as well as 8 major campaigns and the Battle of the Bulge. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star Medal during WWII. He was a member of the National Rifle Association, New Bedford Rifle, Revolver and Gun Owner Action League and a lifetime member of AMVETS. Mr. Soares also enjoyed going out dancing with his wife.
His family includes his son, Michael A. Soares and his wife Patricia of Illinois; his daughter, the late Judith Soares; 3 grandsons: Michael and his wife Carrie, David and his wife Cindy and Brian and his wife Erika; as well as 7 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his special friend Janet Kelly.
In accordance with his wishes, he will be cremated. A burial with full military honors of his ashes will take place Wednesday at 11:00 A.M. at St. John Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited and asked to meet directly at the cemetery. Visiting hours are omitted. Arrangements are placed in the care of Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St. in New Bedford.
