New Bedford – Irene Vaz, age 84 years, died Sunday, April 28th, 2013 at St. Luke’s Hospital after a period of declining health. She was the beloved widow of Edmund S. Vaz. Irene was born in New Bedford, the daughter of Maria (Santos) and Jesse DeMello. She resided in Dartmouth and was a graduate of Dartmouth High School. She worked as a Weaver at Berkshire Hathaway until her retirement but continued to work part time as a Nurse’s Aide at St. Luke’s Hospital and then at Winthrop’s Card Shop.
Her family includes her three sons: Robert E. Vaz and his wife Judit of North Dartmouth, Randall P. Vaz and Ryan M. Vaz, both of South Dartmouth; 6 grandchildren: Stephanie L. Thompson, Craig R. Vaz, Justin M. Vaz, Jamison P. Vaz, Michael R. Vaz and Rachael M. Vaz; her siblings: Beverly Zimberlin and Juliet Medeiros, both of Dartmouth, the late Vivian Santos and the late Jesse DeMello; as well as 2 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Vaz’ funeral will be Thursday, May 2nd from the Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St. in New Bedford, at 10:15 A.M. with a Religious Service to begin at 11:00 A.M. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Wednesday evening from 6 – 8 P.M. Relatives and friends are invited.
