New Bedford- Lena Medeiros age 97, formerly of South Dartmouth, passed away on Friday, April 12th at the Oaks of New Bedford. She was the devoted wife of the late George Medeiros, a WWII Purple Heart recipient, who returned from the war a paraplegic as the result of being wounded in the battle fields of Germany.
Her husband undoubtedly was a war hero who sacrificed so much for his country but Lena was also a hero of sorts, one of the many unsung soldier wife heroes on the home front waiting and praying for their loved ones to return safely and willing to accept whatever challenge lie ahead. She devoted her life to her soldier hero, caring, loving and supporting him until his death in 1974.
Lena’s story is truly a WWII love story of the devotion and unwavering love and dedication to go the distance. She never expected more than what was necessary and she never relinquished her personal challenge of caring for him.
Lena was the last surviving child of the 5 children of Manuel and Adelaide (Silvia) Melo of New Bedford. Predeceasing Lena were her brother James Melo, Esther Furtado, Stella Correia and Mabel Costa. She leaves behind several nieces and nephews.
Her family wishes to thank the staff and management at The Oaks for their dedicated service to Lena during her final days.
Mrs. Medeiros’ funeral from the Perry Funeral Home 111 Dartmouth St. will be on Thursday, April 18th at 8:45 A.M. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at St. Mary’s Church in Padanaram, South Dartmouth at 10 A.M. Entombment will follow at Notre Dame Cemetery in Fall River. Family and friends are invited. Visiting hours are omitted
