New Bedford- Jose G. Da Silva, age 90, died Monday, March 11th at St. Luke’s Hospital. Jose was the beloved husband of the late Angelina Da Silva. Survivors include his three sons: Roy Silva of New Bedford, Silverio Da Silva of Florida, and Carlos Da Silva of New Bedford. He was also survived by 10 grandchildren: Deborah Harding of Acushnet, Craig De Mello of Dartmouth,Wendy Almeida of Dartmouth, Roy Da Silva of Rochester, Jacqueline Silva of New Bedford, Jeffrey Da Silva of Cambridge, Ma, Brian Da Silva of New Bedford, Jason Silva of New Bedford, Nicole Da Silva of Wareham, and Jennifer Guckel of Northbridge, Ma; as well as 13 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of brother of Alice Da Silva of Canada as well as 10 deceased siblings.
Jose was predeceased by his daughter Bernadette M. De Mello and his son Mario Da Silva.
Mr. Da Silva, also known as Jose’ Bica, was born in Pico, Azores and moved to Faial, Azores at a young age, he was the son of Maria (DaSilva) Garcia and Antonio Garcia DaRosa. It was in Faial that he met his wife, Angelina, with whom he shared 58 years of marriage with until her passing in October of 2001. In 1959, he and his family left the Azores and moved to the United States. They settled in New Bedford where Mr. Da Silva worked at Mickey Madann Handbags. He, along with his children, owned and operated Park Liquors in New Bedford for many years.
Mr. Da Silva loved his family and enjoyed their company whenever possible. He also enjoyed traveling and watching sports, especially soccer. His greatest passion, however, was fishing. He was a fisherman while in Faial and continued his love of the ocean and fishing in the United States. Most of his spare time would be spent fishing or working on his boat if the weather did not permit taking the boat out. Even in his later years, after losing his leg, he would climb into his boat and go out into the ocean.
Mr. Da Silva’s funeral will be Saturday, March 16th at Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St. in New Bedford at 7:45 A.M. with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Church at 8:45 A.M. Burial to follow at St. John Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Friday evening from 5 – 8 P.M. Relatives and friends are invited.
