New Bedford – John Lima, age 86 years, died Tuesday, February 26th at St. Luke’s Hospital after a period of declining health. He was the loving husband of Ethel (Fortes) Lima of N. Dartmouth. Mr. Lima is survived by his two children: Carl John Lima of Acushnet and Kathleen Alison Silva and her husband Daniel, of N. Dartmouth. Other survivors include: his wife Ethel, 2 grandsons: Peter Joseph Hegarty III and John Patrick Hegarty; as well as several nieces and nephews.
John was predeceased by his siblings, Edmund Lima and Izabel Spencer.
Mr. Lima was born in New Bedford, son of Beatriz (Leite) and Braulio Lima. He was a lifelong resident of this area. John proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict in which he held the rank of Corporal. After his service, John worked as a Welder at General Dynamic in Quincy, Ma. He also worked as a Carpenter for several companies before opening his own contracting business, Lima Construction in Dartmouth. After his retirement, John invested in The Main Event in New Bedford becoming part owner.
Mr. Lima’s funeral will be Saturday, March 2nd at Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St at 8:00 A.M. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Assumption Church at 9:00 A.M. Burial will follow at St. John Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Friday evening from 5 – 8 P.M. Relatives and friends are invited.
