Dartmouth – Assunta “Susie” Seneca-Jones, age 88, died Wednesday, February 13th with her loving daughter by her side at their home in Dartmouth. She is survived by her daughter, Michelle Jones of Dartmouth, her sister Mena Yarnold and her brother Tony Seneca both of Portland, Maine; numerous nieces and nephews as well as her poodle, Gypsy. She was predeceased by 4 brothers: Charles Seneca, Joseph Seneca, Vincent Seneca and Sil Seneca.
Assunta was born in Portland, Maine daughter of Rita (DeMauro) and Joseph Seneca. She lived in Boston for over 25 years before moving Scituate, Ma for many years. Prior to her retirement, Susie worked as a Bookkeeper. She was a very caring and compassionate woman who enjoyed traveling with her daughter. Her self-taught worldly knowledge allowed her to master her favorite pastime, cryptograms and crossword puzzles, which she continued to do until Alzheimer’s waged a fierce attack on her mind and body at the age of 87. Assunta was a published poet. She loved life and expressed it in her many beautiful poems throughout her life. In her writings, Susie expressed her love for God, her family and her dogs. When she was 12 years old, she had her own newspaper column in the Portland Press Herald called “Small Packages” which contained all of her own work. More recently, her poem entitled “The Wanderer” was published in the 1996 “Fields of Gold” – The National Library of Poetry. The same drive she had for poetry, she instilled into her daughter. Losing her own mother at the age of 12, she was determined to give her daughter all the opportunities she never had while growing up. Her only daughter, Michelle, credits her Mom for everything that is good about her. It was Susie’s encouragement that gave Michelle the ambition to be the first of her family to receive an MBA. She had a personality anyone would gravitate towards and a remarkable sense of humor which was a major part of who she was as an individual. She loved her poodles very much but most of all, she loved her daughter and her best-friend, Michelle.
Her daughter would like to thank her mother’s wonderful caregivers, Becky Bryant and Sheila Costa, as well as her dear companion, June Cosme, for their attentive and tender care they gave to Assunta during her period of declining health.
In accordance with her wishes, she will be cremated. Donations can be made in her honor to the Alzheimer’s Foundation
