NEW BEDFORD – Lydia Sylvia, 83, died Sunday, February 10th at Sacred Heart Home with her family by her side. She was the beloved wife of Joseph G. Sylvia Sr. of New Bedford. Mrs. Sylvia is survived by 4 children: Joseph G. Sylvia Jr., husband of Christine, of New Bedford; Ronald Sylvia of North Smithfield, RI; David Sylvia, husband of Carol, of East Wareham, and Christopher Sylvia, husband of Jane, of New Bedford; 8 grandchildren: Jamie, Jeffery, Joelle, Jodi, Melissa, Mallory, Drew and Paige and 5 great-grandchildren: Abigail, Colby, Zachary, Charlotte and Catherine. She was the mother of the late R. Sylvia and was predeceased by 3 siblings.

Lydia was born in New Bedford, daughter of Elvira (Alexander) and John Sylvia. Prior to her retirement, she worked as a Trimmer at Ronnie’s Manufacturing Company. Mrs. Sylvia was a dedicated member of the Holy Name of Sacred Heart Couples Club as well as Holy Name’s Senior’s Club. Lydia loved cooking Sunday dinner for her loving family. Family was very important to her as she worked full-time while her children were young to provide the best life for them. She enjoyed watching her boys play sports, never missing a game. Lydia was the President of the Woman’s Auxiliary for the Greater New Bedford Little League until 1974. She also ran the concession stand for GNB. She, along with her husband Joseph, worked numerous years at D&D Catering. Mrs. Sylvia was a caring matriarch to a loving family. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

The family of Mrs. Sylvia would like to thank the staff at Sacred Heart Home in New Bedford for the attentive care they gave to her during her residency.
Mrs. Sylvia’s funeral will be Thursday, February 14th at the Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St at 7:45 A.M. with a Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church at 9 A.M. Burial will follow at Rural Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Wednesday from 5 – 8 P.M. Relatives and Friends are invited.
