New Bedford – Amelia Pires, age 54 years, died Monday, January 21st after her courageous battle with cancer. She was the loving mother of 2 sons: Derek and Duane Pires, both of New Bedford and a step-daughter Donna Araujo of New Bedford. Survivors include: her granddaughter, Shaniece Pires; her husband David Pires; 6 siblings: Jose Almeida, Jr., Patricia Almeida, Donna Ardoin, Paul Almeida, Doreen Almeida and Robert Almeida; as well as several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Ms. Pires was born in New Bedford, daughter of the late Theresa (Sylvia) and the late Jose Almeida, Sr. Amelia was a lifelong resident of New Bedford, she studied healthcare for 2 years at UMASS Dartmouth, formerly SMU. She was employed as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Savoy Nursing Home in New Bedford. Ms. Pires loved music, specifically, Luther Vandross, Christmas music and anything playing on the Oldies but Goodies station. She enjoyed dining out with her friends and family. One of her favorite dishes was shrimp Mozambique. Amelia was a proud woman; always presented herself as a lady. She always spoke her mind, which illustrated her personality as being a leader. She was the 2nd oldest of 6 siblings. Her sister described her as “the epitome of an older sister.” As a teenager, Amelia worked as much as she could in order to contribute to her families well being. As a mother, she always put her children first. Amelia Pires will be greatly missed by her friends and family.
Ms. Pires funeral will be Friday, January 25th at 8 A.M. at Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St. with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at Our Lady of Assumption Church at 9 A.M. Burial will follow at Rural Cemetery. Visiting hours will be at the funeral home on Thursday, January 24th from 6 – 8 P.M. Relatives and friends are invited.
