New Bedford – Lucy Gomes, age 94 years, passed away on Friday, January 18th at her home in New Bedford. She was the beloved wife of Manuel Gomes. Mrs. Gomes was the loving mother of 3 children: Michael Gomes, husband of Ester, of Dartmouth, Gary Gomes, husband of Ann Marie of Dartmouth and Diane Pearson, wife of Daniel, of Starke, Fla. She is survived by one brother, Manuel Carvalho; 5 grandchildren: Michael, Jocelyn, Lauren, Eric and Elizabeth; as well as one godchild Bernadette Brocklehurst.
Lucy is predeceased by 3 brothers and 3 sisters.
Mrs. Gomes was born in New Bedford, daughter of Margarida (Zimbron) and Jose Carvalho. She was a lifelong resident of New Bedford. Mrs. Gomes was a dedicated matriarch and devoted home maker to her loving family. Lucy was a woman of many hobbies and wonderful traits. She was a master seamstress and would make all of her daughter’s school clothing. She would effortlessly finish crossword puzzles and would read through books three or four at a time. Lucy was also an avid Red Sox fan; very rarely missing a game. But most of all, Lucy loved her family. Her husband, Manuel, was her first and only love. Some of her most treasured times was traveling with him. She loved to go for long car rides, just as long as she was the passenger. Lucy did not like to drive. She did, however, love days at the beach when her children were young. Mrs. Gomes was a loving mother and a devoted wife. She will be missed by everyone fortunate enough to know her.
Mrs. Gomes' funeral will be Wednesday with a service to begin at 12:30 P.M. at the Perry Funeral Home 111 Dartmouth St. Visitation will be 1hour prior to the service from 11:30 A.M. to 12:30 P.M. Burial will follow at Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. Please omit flowers.
