Arminda A. “Minnie” Souza, age 89 years, died peacefully at St. Luke’s Hospital on Sunday, January 6. She was the beloved widow of James Souza, who passed away August 27, 2010. Mrs. Souza was the loving mother of 1 daughter, Jane A. Carreiro of Dartmouth. She was the grandmother of Darren J. House of Dartmouth and the late Justin A. House. Arminda is survived by 3 sisters: Clementina Dawson of Westport, Gloria Mello of Fairhaven and Delores Piazza of Dartmouth as well as many nieces and nephews and several cousins. Mrs. Souza is predeceased by siblings including John and Joseph Affonso.
Mrs. Souza was born in New Bedford, daughter of Anna Maria (Fernandes) and Jose M. Affonso. Minnie, as she was lovingly known by many, was employed as a Registered Nurse in the Intensive Care Unit at St. Luke’s Hospital. She was also the Charge Nurse on the Hathaway 2 unit at St. Luke’s. Minnie enjoyed spending her winters in Bradenton, Florida with her husband James. But mostly, Arminda enjoyed the company of her loving family.
Mrs. Souza’s funeral will be Friday, January 11 at 8:45 A.M. at Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St. with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at St. Mary’s Church in Dartmouth. Burial will follow at Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. Visiting hours will be at the funeral home on Thursday, January 10 from 6 – 8 P.M. Relatives and friends are invited.
