NEW BEDFORD – Carol (Cunningham) Rogers, 80, of New Bedford, died unexpectedly December 3, 2012 surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late Jerrold J. Rogers.
A lifelong resident of New Bedford, she was the daughter of the late Arthur A. and Caroline C. (Hughes) Cunningham and the daughter-in-law of the late Alfred B. and Alice (Jennings) Rogers. She attended St. Mary’s Church of South Dartmouth and was formerly a member of St. James’ Church of New Bedford.
She was a graduate of New Bedford Vocational School, and worked as a telephone operator before starting her family. Her life-long goal was to be a stay-at-home Mom, which was realized by being blessed with six children and nine grandchildren. She was extremely proud of her children and their accomplishments and very fond of their spouses. She delighted in spending time with her grandchildren and they loved being with her – her grandchildren coined the term “Grandma-nice” to capture her sweetness of spirit and gentle soul. She loved to travel with her husband of 54 years – their last major trip abroad was to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in London, England. She recently celebrated her 80th year with multiple parties with her children and grandchildren in Georgia and Massachusetts. In her later years, she enjoyed “wintering” in Georgia.
She was the proud mother of six children: daughter Linda Rogers; son Michael Rogers and his wife Mary Menke Rogers; son Scott Rogers (deceased) and his wife Jean Rogers; son Darren Rogers; son Christopher St. John Rogers and his wife Susan; daughter Wendy Rogers and her husband Dan Fisk; and loving grandmother of eight grandchildren: Nicholas Rogers, Daniel Towers, Cassandra Rogers, Mary-Elizabeth and her husband Joshua Mello, Kathrine Rogers, Benjamin Rogers, Ashley Harp, and Danny Fisk. She was excitedly looking forward to the arrival of her newest grandchild due this month.
She was also the sister of Nancy Cunningham-Brown and her husband Robert; Arthur J. Cunningham (deceased) and his wife Louise Cunningham, as well as nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, her family requests that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (www.stjude.org), which was her favorite charity.
Her Funeral Mass will be at 11 AM on Friday, December 7 at St. Mary’s Church, South Dartmouth, MA.
Arrangements are by Perry Funeral Home, New Bedford, MA. Calling hours will be Thursday, December 6 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM.
