New Bedford-Palmira Zulmira (Botelho) Garcia, 75, of New Bedford died Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at St. Luke’s Hospital. She was the loving widow of Manuel L. Garcia. They were married 38 years before his death in 1987.
Born in Fayal, Azores, she was the daughter of the late Manuel and Isabel A. (Silva) Botelho. She lived in New Bedford since immigrating to this country in 1949.
Mrs. Garcia was a resident of the Brandon Woods Nursing Home, she was formerly employed by Leading Sportswear were a stitcher and a union member of the ILGWU until her retirement. She was particularly proud of becoming a citizen of the United States in 1998.
She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, who cherished her time with her family. Cooking Portuguese dishes brought her great pleasure. She will be greatly missed.
Survivors include a son Fernando M. Garcia, and his wife Jacqueline of New Bedford; two grandchildren Andrew J. Garcia and Matthew J. Garcia both of New Bedford; a brother Jose Botelho of Sommerville, MA.; two brother-in-laws, Jose L. and Alberto M. Garcia both of Fayal, Azores; three sister-in-laws, Maria DaSilva Botelho from New Bedford, Maria Z. Oliveira from Pico, Azores, and Judite M. Batista from Fayal, Azores; and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Manuel and Antonio Botelho, Francisco B. DaSilva, Maria A. Cardoso, and Alice Neves.
Mrs. Garcia funeral mass will be at 9 A.M. Saturday June 19, 2004 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, New Bedford; Her visiting hours will be Friday June 18th from 6-8 P.M.. She will be buried will be at St. John Cemetery.
