Dartmouth – Manuel G. “Shoe maker” Sylvia Jr., age 92, died Thursday, October 25 at St. Luke’s Hospital. He was the beloved husband of the late Evangeline (Medeiros) Sylvia. Mr. Sylvia was the loving father of Anna Pereira wife of Luis, Evangeline "Dolly" Sylvia both of Dartmouth, Mary Sylvia, Joseph Sylvia and Rose Rebello all of New Bedford. Manuel is also survived by his brother Joseph G. Sylvia of New Bedford, 21 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Sylvia was father of the late John Sylvia, brother of the late Antone Sylvia, Victor Sylvia, Mary Mendes, Rose Dutilly and Izauro Avila.
Mr. Sylvia was a son of the late Rose J. (Cotta) and Manuel G. Sylvia. He was born in New Bedford and lived in Dartmouth most his life. He was a prior watchman for the D.N. Kelly boat yard. Manuel was combat engineer in the US Army, company #779 and veteran of WWII.
Manuel’s funeral will be from the Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St. on Monday at 8:45 A.M. with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at St. Mary’s Church in South Dartmouth at 10 A.M. Burial will follow at St. John’s Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Sunday from 5-8 P.M. Relatives and friends are invited.
