Lionel Fernandes

New Bedford – Lionel Fernandes., age 85, passed away at home Thursday, August 30. Mr. Fernandes was the beloved husband of the late Mary (Veary) Fernandes who passed away in 1982 and his second wife the late Lillian (La Freniere) Fernandes who passed in 2007.

Mr. Fernandes was born in Fairhaven, the son of the late Julia (Mello) Fernandes and the late Mariano Fernandes. He lived in this area his entire life and worked as a Stock Handler at Acushnet Company Rubber Division.

Lionel proudly served his country in the United States Army during WWII.

Survivors include his children: Eileen Fernandes and her partner Carolyn Crane of Keene NH, and Ronald Fernandes of New Bedford; his stepchildren; Kathleen Edwards and Michael Edwards, both of New Bedford and his grandson Brian Edwards. Mr. Fernandes is survived by three brothers: Gilbert Fernandes of New Bedford, George Fernandes of New Bedford and Richard Fernandes of Fairhaven; and one sister Mary “Peggy” Evangelho of Dartmouth. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews

A graveside service with burial of cremains will be held Saturday, October 6 beginning at 10:30 A.M. at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Relatives and Friends are invited to meet at the cemetery
