John J. Pires

New Bedford - John J. Pires, 86, died Thursday, May 10, 2012 at St. Luke’s Hospital. John was the beloved husband of the late Hilda (Monteiro) Pires. Father of Nancy Pires of Riverside, RI, David M. Pires of New Bedford, MA and the late Margaret “Peggy” Pires. He was the stepfather of John Monteiro of New Bedford, MA. Mr. Pires was the grandfather of Sara Monteiro and John Monteiro. Mr. Pires was the brother of David Pires of Rhode Island. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.


Mr. Pires was born in Brava, Cape Verde Islands and came to this country on the schooner Ernestina in 1948. He was a son of Jose Silvestre Pires and Margarida (Leite) Pires. John served with the United States Coast Guard during both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Mr. Pires was employed as a cook on a tugboat for several years.

Mr. Pires’ funeral will be at the Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St. Tuesday. Services at 11 A.M. Visiting hours are Monday from 5-8 P.M. Relatives and friends are invited. Burial at Rural Cemetery.
