Louis M. Borges died on January 9th, 2012 at Savoy Nursing and Rehabilitative Center with his loving family by his side. Mr. Borges was 95 years old. He was the widower of Arlene M. Borges, son of the late Maria and Manuel Borges. Brother of the late Joseph, Manuel and Antero Borges.
Born in New Bedford he was a well known musician and conductor, well respected by his colleagues.
Known as New Bedford’s very own “Music Man” he was the conductor of the Bay State Band of New Bedford and the German Band, the co -conductor of the Dartmouth Community Band, member of the Joe Ponte Orchestra, and named a lifetime member of the Taunton Municipal Band.
Along with his music he was often recognized for his work in the shoe department at Cherry and Webb and the Star Store of New Bedford, the Immigrants Assistance Center and a Senior Aid for Coastline Elderly Services.
He was a communicant of St. John the Baptist Church.
Mr. Borges was a Sergeant in the United States Army, World War II Veteran. He was a member of the Portuguese American War Veterans Post #1 and the Musician’s Protective Union Local 231.
Louie was a proud War Veteran, a talented and well respected musician, avid fisherman and gardener, but of all the loves in his life, his family was everything. It was fitting that he passed away surrounded by what mattered most to him, his loving family. His family takes great comfort in knowing he is now with his beloved wife, together again.
He leaves a daughter Janet Hesketh and her husband Thomas of Fairhaven, 2 granddaughters Lisa House and her husband James of New Bedford, and Lori Pacheco and her husband Joel of East Freetown, 3 great grandchildren Kristen, Alex and Jacob House, and his sister Cecelia Penha of Attleboro and several nieces and nephews. He also has family in Sao Miguel, Azores including his cousin Jose Mota Viera.
Mr. Borges’ funeral will be Saturday at Perry Funeral Home at 8 A.M. with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at St. John the Baptist Church at 9 A.M. Burial will follow with Full Military Honors at St. John Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Friday from 4-7 P.M. Relatives and friends are invited.
